swamp gum
Eucalyptus ovata
Fast-Growing • Hardy • Excellent for Wet or Heavy Soils
Swamp Gum is one of the best eucalyptus species for lifestyle blocks needing quick shelter, firewood, or height in areas that stay damp, heavy, or poorly drained. As the name suggests, it thrives in wet soils where many other trees struggle — but it also performs well in drier conditions once established. With fast growth, a tall straight form, and attractive pale bark, Swamp Gum delivers reliable results for shelterbelts, woodlots, and regeneration projects.
This species is particularly useful for establishing rapid shelter on clay soils, around swales, in wet gullies, or along paddock edges that stay soft underfoot. Its timber and firewood qualities are strong, and while it grows quickly, it also holds good durability. Swamp Gum pairs well with alders, tagasaste, flax, and other hardy species that help stabilise difficult land.
If you need a tough, fast-growing tree that can handle wet feet, Swamp Gum is one of the most resilient options available.

Planting & Care
Plant in full sun with plenty of space to grow. Swamp Gum enjoys damp soil during establishment but will tolerate reduced moisture as it matures. Mulch well in clay soils to moderate moisture and temperature. Water in dry spells during the first year. Protect from stock and strong browsing. Expect rapid height gain in the first 3–5 years.
