Kānono

Coprosma grandifolia
Fast Shelter • Moisture-Loving • Lush Native Foliage
Kānono is one of the most lush, reliable native shrubs for fast shelter and understory planting. With its large, glossy green leaves and dense, upright growth, it creates quick visual cover and thrives in damp, shaded, or difficult spots where many other plants struggle. Ideal for lifestyle blocks needing hardy, low-maintenance planting that still looks vibrant and green year-round.
This species is particularly valuable for filling in gaps in native shelterbelts, softening edges around structures, and stabilising damp or shaded areas. Kānono also tolerates wind, clay soils, and semi-coastal conditions, and attracts native birds with its orange berries. It layers beautifully under taller natives and pairs well with Pittosporum, Akeake, Flax, and Tī Kōuka.
If you want lush greenery, fast growth, and a dependable native that copes with wet, cool, or sheltered areas, Kānono is one of the best choices you can make.
