bronze flax / purple mountain flax (wharariki)
Phormium cookianum ‘Purpureum’
Tough • Structural • Coastal & Clay Tolerant
Bronze Mountain Flax is one of the most versatile and hard-working natives you can plant on a lifestyle block. With its bold, chocolate-bronze foliage and tidy, upright form, it brings instant structure, movement, and colour contrast to any landscape. This variety thrives in coastal winds, heavy clay, drought, wet patches, and exposed sites where many other plants struggle, making it a reliable choice for low-maintenance planting.
It’s ideal for creating texture in native gardens, filling gaps in shelterbelts, stabilising slopes, or mass planting along driveways and boundaries. Bronze Flax is also a favourite for weaving and craft uses, producing long, strong leaves that can be harvested as needed without harming the plant.
If you need a hardy, zero-fuss native that looks good year-round and handles almost any conditions, Bronze Mountain Flax is a must-have.

Planting & Care
Plant in full sun for deepest bronze colour, though it will also cope well with light shade. Water during establishment, then allow to grow with minimal care — Mountain Flax is extremely resilient. Remove spent or damaged leaves once a year to keep the clump tidy. Can be divided every few years if you want additional plants.
